FOR SPONSORS
Q. Who are you crazy people and why should I give you money?
A. San Diego Writers, Ink is a nonprofit organization that nurtures writers and those wishing to explore the craft of writing, fosters a literary community, promotes literature and celebrates artistic diversity. We are an inclusive, volunteer-run group who values written expression. Last year we put on more than 35 classes and workshops, and a couple dozen readings and special events, plus our regular ongoing weekly and monthly writing groups, readings and other gatherings. And we collaborated with a number of other nonprofit cultural and arts organizations. We’re a lively, active group. Your pledge helps us continue the good work we do promoting the literary arts in our community.
Q. Sounds great! How do I make a pledge?
A. Log on to http://sandiegowriters.org/programs_events_participantpledgepage09.htm. Pick the writer you’d like to sponsor, click on their name, and when you’re on their pledge page click the "buy now" button.
Q.I don't like math. Can I make a flat donation instead of an hourly pledge?
A. Sure. Paypal allows you to enter any amount you like.
Q. Technology schmechnology! I'd rather pay by check!
A. Checks should be made out to "San Diego Writers, Ink" or "SDWI." Please give them to the writer you're sponsoring or mail them to: San Diego Writers, Ink, PO Box 34374, San Diego, CA 92163. You can download a sponsor pledge sheet at: http://www.sandiegowriters.org/programs_events_sponsorform.htm
And Thank You!
FOR PARTICIPANTS
Q. Who can participate? Is this a members-only thing?
A. Anyone who brings or raises $100 and is eager to spend a day writing is welcome to join in! Of course we'd love for you to show your support by becoming a member and enjoying benefits like reduced class fees and admission to Room to Write. Your membership helps support our ongoing programs.
Q. I don't like asking my friends for money.
A. Personally, I was surprised how flattered my friends were to be asked to contribute to an organization so dear to my heart. The sample letters made it easy to frame my request graciously and effectively. When you sign up, you’ll be sent some sample sponsor letters and a list of “Ideas for Participants” on that offers suggestions for easy and fun ways to approach sponsors.
Q. Nine hours? Won't I get hungry?
A. You obviously don't know Judy Reeves! There will be ample snacks, beverages, and rest breaks. The environment will be as productive as we can make it.
Q. I'm a wimp and only want to write for three hours.
A. This isn't prison. Bring a hundred bucks, you can leave anytime! But part of the fun is that we're all in this together, pushing our limits, seeing how much we can accomplish.
Q. What will the day look like? Give me a play-by-play.
A. Every hour a different instructor will lead an optional writing exercise or provide prompts to fuel your imagination. (This is a great way to meet our teachers!) We'll take 10 minutes stretch breaks every hour to keep our limbs limber and 45 minutes for lunch. Walks around the block will be encouraged.
Q. But I just want to work on my novel.
A. A section of the room will be reserved for those who wish to ignore the prompts and focus on projects-in-process.
Q. So, besides $100, what should I bring?
A. The $100 is a minimum donation so feel free to bring more! Some writers like to set a goal of $500 or $1000. Every dollar is genuinely appreciated. You'll also need:
A laptop and/or notebook and pen
Comfortable clothing
Anything that makes you comfortable and productive such as footrests, wristrests, headphones or bedroom slippers. Snacks and refreshments will be provided, but if you have special writing fuel, bring it along, too.
Q. Wow! Camaraderie with fellow writers, support a great organization AND nine hours to write! How do I sign up?
A. You can sign up on our website http://sandiegowriters.org/prorams_events_blazinglaptops2.htm, or just send an email with “Sign Me Up!” in the subject line to blazinglaptops@mac.com
