| | Getting Into Character
San Diego Writers, Ink is delighted to welcome back Midge Raymond for another an all-too-brief visit from Seattle.
GETTING INTO CHARACTER -- Whether you’re writing fiction or memoir, characters are what make your stories live and breathe. In this seminar, you’ll learn how best to bring characters to life, whether you’re creating them for a short story or novel, or whether you’re portraying real characters in a memoir. We’ll look at classic and contemporary examples of good characterization and discuss how character relates to other aspects of story, such as dialogue, setting and plot. We’ll spend time on writing exercises designed to flesh out your characters, both on and off the page, so you’ll be fully in character by the seminar’s end.
Midge Raymond's short-story collection, Forgetting English (Eastern Washington University Press, 2009), received the Spokane Prize for Short Fiction. Her work has appeared in TriQuarterly, American Literary Review, Ontario Review, North American Review, the Los Angeles Times, and other publications. Midge has taught communication and creative writing at Boston University; Boston's Grub Street Writers; San Diego Writers, Ink; and Seattle's Richard Hugo House. Her current projects are supported by an Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Fellowship.
