The desire to tell stories is timeless and universal, yet many writers falter after a few pages when the inner critic marches in and says, “No good.”  During this day long workshop - open to writers of both fiction and non fiction – we’ll work on strategies to silence the inner critic.  With in-class readings and exercises we will then tease apart our personal experiences and begin drafting that essay or short story that begs to be told.  We will also set some time aside for exercises in the use of  dialogue, setting and character development, all vital in creating a compelling narrative.

Lisa Fugard is the author of Skinner's Drift, a NY Times Notable Book of 2006, a finalist for the LA Times First Fiction Award, and the runner up for the 2007 Dayton Literary Peace Prize.  Her short stories have been anthologized and featured on "Selected Shorts on NPR.  She has written numerous travel articles and book reviews for the New York Times,  and is the recipient of a 2009 fellowship to the Bread Loaf Writers Conference.
